West Dorset: Princess Di's dress fetches £192,000
|
THE continuing love affair with Princess Diana saw the 1981 black dress marking her debut as a fashion icon sell for more than six times its pre-sale estimate.
Kerry Taylor, from Morcombelake, arranged the auction of the Emanuel Royal Archive as part of the her Passion for Fashion auction last week.
Mrs Taylor, who has been in the auction business since 1979, has known the Emanuels for years.
It was thought the off the shoulder black dress would fetch between £30,000 and £50,000 – but was sold to a fashion museum in Chile for £192,000.
The dress was for the then Lady Diana Spencer’s first royal engagement and was the herald of things to come, both in her marriage – Charles disapproved of it – and her relationship with the press – who were delighted.
Mrs Taylor said although the price paid by Jorge Yarur, who founded the Chilean fashion museum, was considerably higher than expected it was a reflection of the world’s enduring love affair with the princess.
