Prince Harry aids landmine campaign just like Princess Diana
Princess-Diana.com - Prince Harry spent two days visiting HALO minefields. Princess-Diana.com - Princess Diana in Angola.Prince Harry follows his mother's humanitarian example, strolling in a cleared minefield to draw attention to the plight of victims.

He spent two days meeting amputee blast victims in Mozambique - and even blew up seven landmines himself.

Soldier Harry, 25, was inspired to visit the Halo Trust by Princess Diana's celebrated work with the world's largest de-mining charity, a source revealed.

And he impressed the British trust's boss with his "gritty determination and concentration". Guy Willoughby said: "He listened, learned and got stuck in.

"We discussed Diana's work and I think the number of landmine victims coming home from Afghanistan where he saw action has brought the subject even closer to his heart."

Hundreds of families live next to about 30,000 mines laid more than 30 years ago in Tete province. Among the victims Harry met were a boy whose leg was blown off as he herded cattle.

The Prince donned a flak jacket with face visor before watching a team manually clear a mine using metal detectors and hand-tools. Then he detonated some himself watched by experts and spent Sunday night in the workers' camp.

St James's Palace said: "Prince Harry knows via his mother and his military career how devastating landmines are. He was very impressed by Halo's work."

The charity, which has rid the world of 1.3million mines, won a major boost in 1997 through Diana's actions as an International Red Cross VIP volunteer.

Photos of her crossing an Angola minefield in protective gear in 1997 gave Halo's cause world publicity. She campaigned for all mine-producing nations to sign the Ottawa Treaty, creating a ban. Thirteen years after she died some still have not.

Mr Willoughby said: "Diana was brilliant at getting the risk of mines globally recognised. I very much hope Harry picks up his mother's mantle."
